Scenario 1

photo of Billy

Meet Billy

  • Billy is four years old.
  • During lunch, he uses a large plate and spoon to serve himself.
  • He often over-serves himself, leaving inadequate amounts of food for the other children and wasting much of his meal.

His childcare provider tells him that he is serving himself too much food and that he won’t be able to finish it.

Think about what opportunities were missed by the adult caregiver and write them in the left column under “Missed Opportunities.” Then, think about ways the provider or parent might have handled the situation in a more positive way and write your ideas on the right side of the chart under "Improvements." You may want to refer back to the lesson as a resource.

  • Today, he only serves himself a large helping of the main entrée.

His childcare provider tells him that he must take a smaller serving of the entrée and take a serving of the vegetables and fruit.
